Firefox 3 Launch Date
Mozilla will be releasing its new Firefox browser on Tuesday 17th June - all being well.
Firefox 3 has been in development for nearly three years (34 months, in fact)
and Mozilla are hoping to set a Guinness World Record on the launch date for the most number of downloads in a day. Currently, there isn’t an official Guinness World Record for the total number of downloads of a software application in a day.
Mozilla is encouraging its users (exceeding 175 million) to sign up on the www.spreadfirefox.com site to download Firefox 3 on the launch date, to host download parties, and to put Firefox badges on websites and blogs. Although I’m keen on Firefox, and currently use FF3 release candidate 2, I think download parties are a geeky step too far!
Unfortunately, I won’t be around on 17th June. Instead, I’ll be setting out on the first day of Alfred Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk. :)
But you can do yourself a favour and download Firefox 3 - it’s a much more web standards compliant browser than Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, and if everyone used web standards compliant browsers websites wouldn’t cost so much to develop, because web developers wouldn’t have to spend time writing hacks and workarounds because of Microsoft’s non-compliance issues.
Mini rant over. :)
